Botanical Name: Ocimum basilicum 'Cinnamon'

Common Names: Cinnamon Basil, Mexican Spice Basil

Appearance: This basil variety has dark green leaves with reddish-purple veins and cinnamon-colored stems. It can grow up to 3 feet tall and produces small pink flowers from July to September.

Flavor Profile: Cinnamon Basil has a unique flavor that combines the traditional taste of basil with a hint of cinnamon, thanks to the compound cinnamate.

Uses: It’s used in teas, baked goods, pasta, salads, jellies, vinegars, and even as a garnish. The leaves can also be used in dried arrangements and potpourri.

Growing Cinnamon Basil

Sunlight: Requires full sun, ideally 6-8 hours of sunlight per day.

Soil: Prefers well-drained, moderately rich soil with a pH ranging from mildly acidic to neutral. Adding compost can improve soil quality.

Watering: Needs consistent moisture but avoid overwatering to prevent rot. Water when the top inch of soil feels dry.

Planting: Start seeds indoors 4-6 weeks before the last frost date or plant nursery-grown seedlings after all frost danger has passed.

Spacing: Space plants 8-12 inches apart.

Companion Planting: Good companion plant for tomatoes and roses, as it helps deter pests like whiteflies.

Care Tips

Pruning: Pinch the tips to encourage bushy growth and remove spikes as they appear.

Harvesting: Best to harvest leaves and stems before the plant flowers for optimal flavor.

Pests: Watch out for aphids and spider mites, which can be controlled with insecticidal soap spray.
